Job Description

Environmental Health and Safety has an opportunity to hire a Fire and Life Safety Specialist.  Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Periodically inspect campus buildings for life safety requirements
  • Coordinate with construction planners on applicability of fire codes
  • Participate in construction project design meetings; providing fire safety reviews
  • Consult with campus partners when questions about the fires code arise
  • Coordinate with Campus Facilities to ensure fire protection systems are working properly
  • Monitor and prepare reports for building fire safety systems testing and certifications
  • Prepare emergency plans for evacuations or sheltering in place.
  • Develop and implement fire and disaster plans and drills.
  • Educate campus population on fire safety
  • Review and investigate fire incidents related to the University
  • Prepare reports for inclusion in Clery Act reporting
  • Liaise with the Kansas City Fire Department on emergency response to campus maintenance of Knox Boxes

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in related/relevant area or equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Industrial Safety, or a closely related field.
  • Two or more years of experience in the inspection of facilities for conformance to fire and building codes.
  • State of Missouri Fire Inspector or Fire Marshal certification, or International Code Council (ICC) Fire Inspector or Fire Marshal certification.
  • Solid understanding of ICC codes (IBC/IFC) and NFPA standards including NFPA 101.
  • Ability to read blueprints, building specifications, floor plans, and similar materials.
  • Knowledge of modern methods, practices and techniques of fire prevention.

NOTE: If an applicant does not currently possess a Fire Inspector or Fire Marshal certification, the successful candidate will be required to obtain a State of Missouri Fire Inspector or Fire Marshal certification, or an ICC Fire Inspector or Fire Marshal certification within 12 months of their hiring date, due to the requisite fire code knowledge required for successfully performing the duties of this position.

Anticipated Hiring Range

$20.66 to $29.41 per hour commensurate with education, experience, and internal equity
