Job Description

The UMKC International Student Affairs Office (ISAO) is accepting applications for an international student advisor with a focus on events and outreach. The position works alongside a small, close-knit team of international education professionals that share a passion for fostering a sense of belonging for students who choose UMKC and Kansas City as their home away from home. The right person for this role will be student centered, detail oriented, self-motivated, and collaborative.

UMKC is currently home to over 1,400 international students from more than 80 different countries. Join us in contributing to UMKC’s tradition of academic excellence, diversity, and community.
Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Lead logistical efforts to plan and implement new student orientations and check-ins each fall and spring semester
• Oversee annual calendar of quality informative programming for international students that address student concerns and needs to encourage a successful academic career and engaging experience for students
• Serve as a staff advisor for the International Student Ambassador Program (ISAP), guiding this team of student leaders in planning peer-to-peer events, most notably International Education Week each fall and Culture Fest each spring
• Develop and collect content for monthly newsletter to current international students related to upcoming events, deadlines, and other timely information
• Maintain open and collaborative communication with students, exchange visitors, UMKC campus partners including faculty and staff, and partners in the greater Kansas City and Missouri communities
• Advise international students and scholars on immigration, cultural, and personal concerns

Shift

Working hours are generally Monday-Friday 8am-5pm with occasional evenings and weekends

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 1 year of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with event planning and logistics
• Strong intercultural communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with non-native English speakers
• Effective public speaking experience
• Excellent problem solving skills
• International education experience and/or experience living abroad
• Proficiency in a foreign language common to UMKC’s international population such as Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Vietnamese, French, or Spanish
• Experience working with Technolutions Slate or other CRM
• Experience working with SEVP and USCIS immigration regulations, especially as a Designated School Official (DSO) and/or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO)

Anticipated Hiring Range

$17.96 – $18.92 per hour, commensurate on experience, education, and internal equity.
